About

Ontology (information science)

In computer science and information science, an ontology is a way of keeping track of how things are interrelated by defining ways of categorizing and linking subjects. Ontology development encompasses representation, formal naming and definition of the categories, properties and relations between the concepts, data and entities.

Example of use

Every academic discipline or field creates ontologies to limit complexity and organize data into information and knowledge. For example, the FAO geopolitical ontology is an ontology developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to describe, manage and exchange data related to geopolitical entities such as countries, territories, regions and other similar areas.
