Image portraying Big data

Big data

A collection of data so large that it cannot be stored, transmitted or processed by traditional means. Often determined by the high velocity, variety and volume of the data. Current usage of the term big data tends to refer to the use of predictive analytics, user behavior analytics, or certain other advanced data analytics methods that extract value from big data.

Example of use

Examples of big data includes: a) Science: The Large Hadron Collider experiments represent about 150 million sensors delivering data 40 million times per second b) Healthcare: Predictive methods for treatment as well as staffing at hospitals and Artificial Intelligence that has been trained on big datasets to facilitate diagnosis c) Internet of Things: Sensors in physical devices that collect data about their surroundings that can be analyzed further after it's been gathered in the cloud.
